Emotional Impacts of AI Adoption
A poll of more than 600 employees reveals a blend of curiosity (41%), caution (35%) and excitement (31%) toward generative AI. Positive feelings slightly edge out concerns and suggest a widespread sense of readiness to engage with AI-powered devices — though not entirely without reservations.
A closer look at the data reveals distinct emotional contours across generations. Gen Z’s curiosity and enthusiasm lead the charge. Millennials show significant inspiration and hope. Gen X/Boomers/Seniors take a more reserved stance of caution and skepticism.
Understanding these generational nuances is crucial for crafting AI strategies that resonate company wide. Although the conversational abilities of AI have improved dramatically, the value of AI-powered devices in the workplace cannot speak for itself. Leaders need a strategy that acknowledges the innovative spirit of younger workers without ignoring the critical eye of their more experienced colleagues.
A substantial 75% of employees believe these devices will keep their employers competitive. An equally strong majority see a direct line between AI tools and their own productivity. However, close to half surveyed (45%) fear their relevance to their employer may be diminished by the very technologies meant to empower them.
Millennials (72%) are the most convinced that AI-powered devices will change the critical skills needed to perform their jobs, compared to their junior (Gen Z, 63%) and older (Gen X/Boomers, 56%) peers. They also most strongly believe they will become less relevant to their employer than their junior and senior counterparts. Gen X/Boomers are the least convinced their skills will undergo a dramatic change as a result of AI devices.
Forward-thinking companies need to develop strategies that resonate across age groups. For Millennials and Gen Z, providing training and career development opportunities could increase their positive outlook. For the more cautious Gen X/Boomers/Seniors, a transparent approach that provides compelling evidence supporting the practical applications of AI may soften their critical eye toward AI devices.
