Letter From the Editor
Think about that 1960s Monty Hall game show. You know, where contestants had to guess what was behind door number one, two, or three to win a prize.
Guess right, you win a car. Guess wrong, you get zonked.
It worked like this: The contestant chose a door. Next, Monty would reveal what was behind one of the other doors the contestant hadn’t picked. And then he would ask the contestant, do you want to change your choice? The excitement, the anticipation, the pressure to make the right choice — it all feels oddly familiar to the position IT decision-makers face today. Stay with me.
IT practitioners are passionate about their tech. And right now, many organizations face pretty high-stakes choices about the future of their IT environment.
Case in point: Broadcom dropped a generous number of breadcrumbs before arriving at the revised view of VMware today. But exactly what that would look like (or what it would cost) did take many by surprise. It’s why a lot of customers are now asking: should I stay or should I go?
In most scenarios, you’re either bearing the responsibility of making the decision or shouldering the burden of making good from a decision someone else made.
Ideally, the roles are not mutually exclusive — especially in IT, where changing one part of the system can have titanic downstream impacts. When facing the Monty Hall problem, you need more than intuition.
Presented with a conundrum, it’s easy to fall into paralysis by analysis. You might find yourself staring down our metaphorical hall of doorways, wondering, what will happen if we choose door number one?
You — and your inevitably large group of stakeholders — will need to make a decision. Sometimes the longer the runway, the longer we’re tempted to kick the can down the road. You have time — until you don’t.
In this issue, we set out to make those decisions easier for you and help you choose the right door every time.
You might be among the high percentage of organizations flirting with multicloud. The flexibility and resiliency are compelling reasons to fall in love. But knowing when, why, and how to adopt multicloud strategically is another story (and you’ll find the answers inside).
There are, inevitably, events that arrive suddenly and without warning. A cyberattack. Hopefully you’ve already done the planning and decision-making so that when it does happen, teams are free to jump into action. If that’s a question mark, then you can’t afford to skip over the Ultimate Incident Response Playbook in this issue.
Technology is continuously evolving — and so must we. We’re pleased to offer you a companion podcast to this issue with episodes available within the articles, as well as on Apple podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.
We’re working on more changes around here at Tech Journal. We’d be delighted to hear from you about your hopes and expectations from us in the future. Drop us a line at TechJournal@insight.com.
